About Us

One day, in the coastal town of Bucksport, Maine, a seed of hope was planted. As one woman looked about the town, she didn’t see the closed papermill, or the empty storefronts.  She saw a community center to celebrate the arts, providing a place for artists to display and sell their creative art, for the community to enjoy and benefit from those artworks, and to teach people of all ages to learn about art, to open up new creative opportunities.  She took a 150-year-old building and brought it back to life with a complete renovation.  It became a place filled with light, overlooking the Penobscot bay, the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, and Fort Knox.  She filled it with beautiful artwork and opened the doors.  She gathered others to help run it and to teach, both in her building and also in the local area schools.  As word of this innovative new resource for art spread, people began coming, finding inspiration in the artworks and seeing Bucksport with new eyes.  More businesses began to open up in the town – another art gallery, a clothing store, a quilt store and more.

The center became so important to the community, that when it became clear that a new business model would be a better fit, several local business owners joined together to form a new nonprofit organization and the woman’s dream was reborn as the Lighthouse Arts & Education center.  The new plans include adding music and poetry/writing arts to the visual arts already in place.  The Education aspect is expanding, with more classes through local schools as well as more classes available for Seniors and adults. Throughout the year, the center has many events scheduled that are designed to celebrate various aspects of art in the community and showcase the incredibly gifted artists from the surrounding areas.

Board of Directors

Lighthouse Arts & Education is very fortunate to have the strong and dedicated people who make up our Board of Directors.  These volunteers give their time and energy to support and grow our mission.  Working with Executive Director Sadie Personeni and Founding Director Kathryn James, they tirelessly work to find the best ways to develop this fledgling organization into the vital and outstanding element of the community that we all envision.
